A common year is any year that has exactly 365 days, and so is not a leap year. For example, the years 2025, 2026, and 2027 are common years. Also, century years like 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, and 2300 that are not divisible by 400 are common years in the Gregorian calendar. Those century years are also called exceptional common years.

There are 7 types of common years, one for each day of the week.

Finding repeating calendar years

For most common years, the following method for finding the next repeating calendar year will work.

Take the year mod 4. Then, if the result is

  • 1, add 6 years.
  • 2 or 3, add 11 years.

For example, the calendars for the years 2025, 2026, and 2027 repeat in 2031 (6 years later), 2037 (11 years later), and 2038 (11 years later) respectively.

The only exceptions occur whenever a century year is not a leap year. In that case, for the 11 consecutive years up to and including that century year, do the following to find the next repeating calendar year:

  • Add 12 years if the year ends with "90", "91", "97", or "98".
  • Add 6 years if the year ends with "93", "94", "95", "99", or "00".

For example, as the year 2100 is not a leap year, the calendars for the years 2090, 2091, 2097, and 2098 repeat in 2102, 2103, 2109, and 2110 (12 years later) respectively; while the calendars for the years 2093, 2094, 2095, 2099, and 2100 repeat in 2099, 2100, 2101, 2105, and 2106 (6 years later) respectively.
